The Heir of Christian
I've recently taken a new job as Youth Pastor. Many people ask me why I feel that youth ministry is so important. Perhaps it was the great memories I had from my youth group. Maybe it was because I saw my own faith become its strongest during this time period. Honestly I think it is because we have the most fun of any other group in the church, but in reality these kids are the immediate future. If you wait just a second, you'll find that they are the ones that are shaping what our society, country, and church looks like and if we don't help them understand who they are and whose they are now, then the future will hold even more uncertainty than it does now.
Galatians 4 1 What I am saying is that as long as an heir is underage, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate. 2 The heir is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father. 3 So also, when we were underage, we were in slavery under the elemental spiritual forces[a] of the world. 4 But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.[b] 6 Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba,[c] Father.” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.
These kids (like all kids) are special. At some point they discover that "it matters not what they were born, but what they could grow to be" (HP paraphrased). They can grow to be adopted into the family of God. My job is to help them and their families develop a close relationship with their Heavenly Father so that they can transform the world.
To me, that is a pretty important task.
So whether they are heir to a fortune or heir to a rocky start, they have a choice about being heir to Jesus. It doesn't help them to unlock secret chambers or inherit a castle with servants at their beck and call, but it will change their lives by changing their hearts.
