Beauty from many perspectives: spirituality and art

Spirituality and Art:

Dale Chihuly is one of my favorite artists. This piece is located at the Seattle Center in Washington state and it has a twin piece in St. Petersburg, Florida. If there is a Chihuly sculpture somewhere, I'll go out of my way to see it. For me his use of color, depth, shapes, and light is stunning. Chihuly changed the way the world looked at glass blowing as it moved into the realm of large-scale sculptures.

But Chihuly's story is as fascinating as his art. People who are familiar with him know he wears an eye patch. He was in a head-on car accident in 1976 where he was propelled through the front windshield. His face was cut by the glass and he was blinded in his left eye. He recovered and returned to glass blowing but dislocated his shoulder in 1979 while body surfing. This ended his ability to blow glass but he still created art. He had others create the pieces with his vision. He says that moving into more of a director or choreographer role (vs actor or dancer) allowed him to see his art from new perspectives. It allowed him to step back and anticipate problems earlier.

What is your purpose?

Sometimes we create something beautiful that makes the world a better place. But sometimes God is calling us to do something similar on a larger scale and what it takes to get there is a different perspective.

I don't know if God is calling you to do something small or large but I do know that whatever it is you have everything you need around you to do it. You may need to rely on other people. In fact its highly likely. It may seem messy at first, but once all the pieces are put together, it will be quite beautiful.

Until Everyone Hears,
